Sure g! Thanks for visiting. :o) I ordered the kit online, but I can't remember the company right now. If you enter "flint knapping kit" in a search engine, you should find several companies that sell them.

Very cool flint tools, Kids!! Was it hard to make the stone break as you wanted it to? How long did those take to make? Skilled stone tool making is an art today.
Grandpa wants a handmade stone knife. He almost bought one from a Hopi Indian craftsman in Arizona, but he waited, and it was gone later. Keep up the hard fun :-)

Cool! Now...what will you do with the flints? I love projects like that with my kids, but in the end, I always toss things out because...how much can I really keep?
I hear ya Jen! For now, they'll stay in a baggie with the kit. If either one of them gets proficient at knapping, it will be interesting to see their first attempts. If it turns out to be a passing fancy, then I probably will eventually toss them. (Like when I find the dusty kit in the basement 5 years from now!)
Mom, it *was* hard to get them to break like we wanted! It took a few tries to figure out how to get any substantial pieces to break off at all. These first pieces were pretty random in shape and size. The only skill they/we really could do deliberately was to make serated edges with the chipper tool. Brianna is demonstrating that process in the 5th and 6th picture, and you can see the serations on many of the "finished" flints in the bottom picture. They really work though! We were able to cut the rather thick leather pad with them. In fact, I had to tell them to stop testing their edges on the pad because I was concerned about it getting too cut up!
Wheee - I'm so getting that for R for his birthday! He will flip for it. We bought (authentic) arrow heads at the recent Revolutionary War re-enactment and made arrows (that work!)
